OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical outcome of patients presenting with symptoms of uncomplicated cystitis who were seen by a doctor, with patients who were given treatment following a diagnostic algorithm.
2.Activity of OP0595/β-lactam combinations against Gram-negative bacteria with extended-spectrum, AmpC and carbapenem-hydrolysing β-lactamases.
Livermore DM1, Mushtaq S2, Warner M2, Woodford N2. J Antimicrob Chemother. 2015 Nov;70(11):3032-41. doi: 10.1093/jac/dkv239. Epub 2015 Aug 25.
BACKGROUND: OP0595 is a diazabicyclooctane that (i) acts as a PBP2-active antibacterial, (ii) inhibits Class A and C β-lactamases and (iii), like mecillinam, gives β-lactamase-independent potentiation of β-lactams targeting other PBPs. We tested its behaviour against β-lactam-resistant Enterobacteriaceae and non-fermenters.
3.Activity of temocillin, mecillinam, ceftazidime, and ceftazidime/avibactam against carbapenem-non-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae without carbapenemase production.

Treatment options for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections are scarce and therefore alternatives with a narrow spectrum or new agents are sought. Antimicrobial susceptibility to temocillin, mecillinam, ceftazidime, and ceftazidime/avibactam was determined using Etest and disk diffusion according to European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) methodology. A total of 77 carbapenem-nonsusceptible Enterobacteriaceae were studied, including Klebsiella pneumoniae (26%), Escherichia coli (26%), Enterobacter cloacae (26%), and Enterobacter aerogenes (22%). Several phenotypic tests, PCRs followed by sequencing and a microbiological bioassay excluded carbapenemase production in all isolates. Antimicrobial susceptibility rates were low for temocillin (15.6%, minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] range 2 to >1,024 μg/ml), moderate for mecillinam (59.7%, MIC range 0.25 to >256 μg/ml), and excellent for ceftazidime/avibactam (100%, zone diameter range 19 to 32 mm, median 25 mm).
4.Indirect resistance to several classes of antibiotics in cocultures with resistant bacteria expressing antibiotic-modifying or -degrading enzymes.
Nicoloff H1, Andersson DI2. J Antimicrob Chemother. 2016 Jan;71(1):100-10. doi: 10.1093/jac/dkv312. Epub 2015 Oct 14.
OBJECTIVES: Indirect resistance (IR), the ability of an antibiotic-resistant population of bacteria to protect a susceptible population, has been previously observed for β-lactamase-producing bacteria and associated with antimicrobial treatment failures. Here, we determined whether other resistance determinants could cause IR in the presence of five other classes of antibiotics.
