1.Prevalence of Quinolone Resistance Genes Among Extended-Spectrum B-Lactamase-Producing Escherichia coli in Mashhad, Iran.
Harifi Mood E1, Meshkat Z2, Izadi N1, Rezaei M3, Amel Jamehdar S2, Naderi Nasab M2. Jundishapur J Microbiol. 2015 Dec 7;8(12):e16217. doi: 10.5812/jjm.16217. eCollection 2015.
BACKGROUND: Escherichia coli is an important bacterial species based on incidence and associated infection severity. Some E. coli strains produce extended-spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) and are called ESBL-producing E. coli. These strains are resistant to most classes of cephalosporin and a number of other classes of antibiotics. Plasmids carrying qnr genes have been found to transmit quinolone resistance.
2.Chemotherapeutic potential of cow urine: A review.
Randhawa GK1, Sharma R2. J Intercult Ethnopharmacol. 2015 Apr-Jun;4(2):180-6. doi: 10.5455/jice.2015022210032. Epub 2015 Mar 7.
In the grim scenario where presently about 70% of pathogenic bacteria are resistant to at least one of the drugs for the treatment, cue is to be taken from traditional/indigenous medicine to tackle it urgently. The Indian traditional knowledge emanates from ayurveda, where Bos indicus is placed at a high pedestal for numerous uses of its various products. Urine is one of the products of a cow with many benefits and without toxicity. Various studies have found good antimicrobial activity of cow's urine (CU) comparable with standard drugs such as ofloxacin, cefpodoxime, and gentamycin, against a vast number of pathogenic bacteria, more so against Gram-positive than negative bacteria. Interestingly antimicrobial activity has also been found against some resistant strains such as multidrug-resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Antimicrobial action is enhanced still further by it being an immune-enhancer and bioenhancer of some antibiotic drugs.
3.Enhancing Phenotypic Detection of ESBL in AmpC co-producers by using Cefepime and Tazobactam.
Kaur J1, Mahajan G1, Chand K2, Sheevani2, Chopra S2. J Clin Diagn Res. 2016 Jan;10(1):DC05-8. doi: 10.7860/JCDR/2016/15264.7041. Epub 2016 Jan 1.
INTRODUCTION: Routine phenotypic methods employing clavulanate and third generation cephalosporins to detect ESBL are not promising for isolates that co-produce an inhibitor-resistant beta lactamase like AmpC.
4.Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in hospital urinary tract infections: incidence and antibiotic susceptibility profile over 9 years.
Toner L1,2, Papa N3, Aliyu SH4, Dev H5, Lawrentschuk N3,6,7, Al-Hayek S5. World J Urol. 2015 Oct 28. [Epub ahead of print]
PURPOSE: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae are an increasing concern regarding antibiotic resistance and their potential to cause serious infections which are difficult to treat. The purpose of this surveillance programme was to assess the incidence of ESBL in adults amongst urinary isolates, identify risk factors, and detail the antibiotic susceptibility profile in order to guide empirical treatment.
