Introduction of B. trispora Fermentation

Blakeslea trispora, abbreviated as B. trispora, is a mould, usually isolated from soil samples. B. trispora performs a trophic cycle of spores and filamentous mycelium, reproduces sexually and asexually, and has both (+) and (-) mating types of strains. B. trispora is capable of overproducing carotenoids, especially lycopene (CAS 502-65-8) and β-carotene (CAS 7235-40-7). It is worth noting that lycopene production requires the interaction of B. trispora (+) and (-) strains and that the excess (-) mating type facilitates the productivity of lycopene synthesis. Due to the attractive bioactive effects of these metabolites, the fermentation of B. trispora is widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and animal feed industries.

Advantages of Blakeslea trispora Fermentation

  • Growth: The advantage of B. trispora is its ability to grow in a wide variety of substrates, i.e. it does not require any specific fermentation conditions to grow. Furthermore, by using agri-food waste or even industrial waste as the substrates, the cost of B. trispora fermentation can be reduced.
  • Production: The fermentation production of B. trispora is a more environmentally friendly and economical process. Microbial fermentation is a good alternative method to obtain valuable products compared to the high cost and limited sources of plant extracts and the disadvantages of chemical synthesis such as low yields, unstable products, low product quality and high production costs.
  • Safety: β-carotene produced by fermentation of B. trispora has been approved as a microbial food colorant in the European Union.

Applications of Blakeslea trispora Fermentation

Blakeslea trispora produces lycopene and β-carotene in the fermentation process.

  • Lycopene

Lycopene is an important intermediate metabolite in the mevalonate metabolic pathway of microorganisms, which has important physiological functions such as prevention of chronic diseases, enhancement of immune response, antioxidant, and as an edible pigment, it is widely used in food and feed, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

  • β-carotene

Lycopene can be converted to β-carotene by lycopene cyclase. B. trispora has the ability to industrially produce β-carotene from lycopene. β-carotene is used as a food coloring and as a precursor to vitamin A. It is widely used in the food, dietary supplement, and nutritional product industries.

Our Services for B. trispora Fermentation

  • Fermentation medium optimization

Exploration of different fermentation medium components such as carbon source, nitrogen source, nutrients, etc. Selecting the best medium composition and optimal pH for B. trispora fermentation.

Optimal fermentation conditions are explored during the shake flask fermentation phase, and the fermentation process is scaled up appropriately. The fermentation of B. trispora is carried out in large fermenters and important parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen and metabolites are monitored in real time during the fermentation process.

  • Fermentation product analysis

We analyze target products by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), perform analytical method validation, and determine limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ). We can provide analytical reports for the target compounds.

BOC Sciences' B. trispora Fermentation

  • Annual production of both lycopene and β-carotene exceeds 1000 kg
  • Obtained ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and ISO 14001 certifications
  • Complete quality management system
