1. Antifungal substances against pathogenic fungi, talaroconvolutins, from talaromyces convolutus
S Suzuki, T Hosoe, K Nozawa, K i Kawai, T Yaguchi, S Udagawa J Nat Prod. 2000 Jun;63(6):768-72. doi: 10.1021/np990371x.
The dichloromethane extract of Talaromyces convolutus cultivated on barley exhibited antifungal activity against Candida albicans. In the course of a search for the active compounds, four new tetramic acid derivatives, talaroconvolutins A (1), B (2), C (3), and D (4), were isolated along with ZG-1494alpha (5), and mitorubrin derivatives. The structures of talaroconvolutins A-D (1-4) were established on the basis of spectroscopic and chemical investigations and chemical correlations. The antifungal activity of the talaroconvolutins against the pathogenic fungi Aspergillus fumigates, Aspergillus niger, C. albicans, and Cryptococcus neoformans was determined.
2. Talaromyces atroroseus, a new species efficiently producing industrially relevant red pigments

Some species of Talaromyces secrete large amounts of red pigments. Literature has linked this character to species such as Talaromyces purpurogenus, T. albobiverticillius, T. marneffei, and T. minioluteus often under earlier Penicillium names. Isolates identified as T. purpurogenus have been reported to be interesting industrially and they can produce extracellular enzymes and red pigments, but they can also produce mycotoxins such as rubratoxin A and B and luteoskyrin. Production of mycotoxins limits the use of isolates of a particular species in biotechnology. Talaromyces atroroseus sp. nov., described in this study, produces the azaphilone biosynthetic families mitorubrins and Monascus pigments without any production of mycotoxins. Within the red pigment producing clade, T. atroroseus resolved in a distinct clade separate from all the other species in multigene phylogenies (ITS, β-tubulin and RPB1), which confirm its unique nature. Talaromyces atroroseus resembles T. purpurogenus and T. albobiverticillius in producing red diffusible pigments, but differs from the latter two species by the production of glauconic acid, purpuride and ZG-1494α and by the dull to dark green, thick walled ellipsoidal conidia produced. The type strain of Talaromyces atroroseus is CBS 133442.
3. ZG-1494 alpha, a novel platelet-activating factor acetyltransferase inhibitor from Penicillium rubrum, isolation, structure elucidation andbiological activity
R R West, J Van Ness, A M Varming, B Rassing, S Biggs, S Gasper, P A Mckernan, J Piggott J Antibiot (Tokyo). 1996 Oct;49(10):967-73. doi: 10.7164/antibiotics.49.967.
A novel inhibitor of platelet-activating factor (PAF) acetyltransferase, an essential enzyme in the remodeling pathway of platelet-activating factor synthesis, was identified by a high throughout screen of natural product extracts of microbial origin. The compound, ZG-1494 alpha, was isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of a culture broth of Penicillium rubrum through bioassay guided fractionation. The structure of ZG-1494 alpha was determined by spectroscopic methods. A key feature of the structure, which is relatively rare among natural products, is the 5-hydroxy-3-pyrrolin-2-one moiety. A 13C-13C INADEQUATE was utilized to unambiguously determine the regiochemistry of this molecule.
